MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today condemned the Trump Administration's decision to allow Tennessee to operate its Medicaid program through a block grant, jeopardizing health care coverage for residents covered by the state's version of Medicaid known as TennCare. Congressman Cohen has been a harsh critic of the state's plan to use a block grant to fund TennCare and has written both state and federal officials to voice his strong opposition to the proposal.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, will introduce on Monday a joint resolution to amend the Constitution by abolishing the Electoral College. In the past 20 years, the archaic institution has twice awarded the presidency to a candidate who did not win the popular vote, defeating the will of the American people.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), who was in the House Gallery on Wednesday when the U.S. Capitol was overrun by insurrectionists, made the following statement on the death of veteran U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick:
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Sicknick, who died defending the U.S. Capitol complex and those of us who work there from mob violence. I strongly support Speaker Pelosi's decision to lower the flags at the Capitol to half-staff in his honor.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) noted the passing of Miriam DeCosta-Willis today, and made the following statement:
"I was saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Miriam DeCosta-Willis, a respected community leader, scholar, educator, legendary glass ceiling-breaker and civil rights pioneer. She was also a great mother of successful children, who are committed to excellence and community-oriented like their parents were. She will be missed."
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) was in the House Chamber earlier today when intruders breached U.S. Capitol security and illegally occupied parts of the Capitol Complex. He is safe and plans to vote later this evening to certify the votes of the Electoral College. He made the following statement:
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Baseball Diplomacy Act to eliminate barriers to Cuban athletes entering the U.S. on non-immigrant visas only for the duration of the baseball season. The measure would allow players to retain their Cuban citizenship and return to Cuba with their earnings, rather than having to renounce their citizenship and abandon their families to play baseball in the United States.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Nationally Enhancing the Wellbeing of Babies through Outreach and Research Now (NEWBORN) Act to help address America's unacceptably high infant mortality rate with concrete solutions. If enacted, the bill would create infant mortality-focused pilot programs in the highest-risk areas of the country to help those most in need address this devastating crisis.
