WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) responded to the news today that the four-year-old Electrolux plant, lured to Memphis with an estimated $188 million in government incentives, will close in 2020 with the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), who was named to the Committee on Science, Space and Technology last week, today was selected by his congressional colleagues to serve on its Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight and on its Subcommittee on Research and Technology.
Congressman Cohen made the following comment:

WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09), Danny Davis (IL-07) and Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today introduced the Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act. This legislation would restore fairness in student lending by treating privately issued student loans the same as other types of private debt are treated in bankruptcy. Until 2005, this type of student loan debt was dischargeable in bankruptcy, but a change to the bankruptcy code that year removed that consumer protection.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) reacted to news late this afternoon that President Trump has agreed to re-open agencies closed in the Trump Shutdown without the $5.7 billion border wall he had been demanding as a condition for ending payless paydays for 800,000 federal employees. The shutdown has lasted a record-breaking 35 days.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, today introduced the Open Book on Equal Access to Justice Act. This legislation requires the federal government to keep records on Equal Access to Justice Act payments, including reimbursements to individuals for attorney's fees accrued as a result of unjustified legal action taken by the federal government.


WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) voted for, and the House passed, 231 to 180, a bill to re-open the Department of Homeland Security through February 28 to provide time for the White House and Congressional Democrats to negotiate border security issues.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
"This is the 11th vote I've cast to re-open agencies of the federal government closed by the Trump Shutdown. It is time for the Senate to act and the President to sign these measures into law and get federal employees back to work."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today voted for, and the House passed, a ninth and tenth bill to re-open the federal government agencies closed by the Trump Shutdown. The first bill, H. J. Res. 28, would provide stopgap funding through February 28, 2019. The second bill, H.R. 648, would provide funding for shuttered federal departments, other than the Department of Homeland Security, through the federal fiscal year which ends September 30, 2019. Both were based on compromises that had previously gained bipartisan support.
