This week, President Obama outlined his vision for the next year during his State of the Union address, I was selected to be the lead Democrat on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, I successfully fought against another Republican attempt to unconstitutionally undermine a woman's right to choose, and I joined Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., to introduce a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) has introduced H.R.411, the Streamlining and Improving Methods at Polling Locations and Early(SIMPLE) Voting Act, which would ensure that every state allows citizens to vote for at least 15 days prior to federal elections and require that states provide adequate poll workers and other resources to prevent wait times of longer than one hour. U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Memphis calls the Tennessee Promise last dollar scholarship program for community college and state technical centers “a fraud.”
And last week he said a plan by President Barack Obama to model a federal program on Tennessee Promise probably won’t get past the Republican majorities in the U.S. Senate and House.
Cohen has been critical of Tennessee Promise from the moment it was proposed in 2014 by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.
At a townhall meeting Downtown last week, Cohen remained sharply critical of the program and Haslam personally.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today hosted his annual District Issues Meeting for Ninth District constituents, welcoming more than 150 Memphians to the Clifford Davis/Odell Horton Federal Building to discuss issues affecting the city and the Mid-South. Congressman Cohen is pleased that many aspects of the President’s plan are similar to the Tennessee HOPE Education Lottery scholarship program that Congressman Cohen, as a Tennessee State Senator, led the 2-decade fight to create. The Tennessee Education Lottery has provided more than $3 billion in education funding to Tennessee students.
