Tennessee
As a fourth-generation Memphian, I have dedicated my life to public service in Memphis and Shelby County. My work has defined my life and affected the lives of people in Memphis, across Tennessee and now across America throughout my career in national, state and local politics.
More on Tennessee
[WASHINGTON, DC] – As many in Congress focused on getting out of town as quickly as possible last week, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) remained focused on his work helping Memphis and introduced the Jobs for Urban Sustainability and Training (JUST) in America Act. The legislation is designed to create jobs and provide training for Americans struggling to find work by eliminating tax breaks to major oil companies and putting the funds towards public works and job training programs for unemployed workers.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that President Obama has nominated Sheryl Lipman, Chief of Staff to University of Memphis Interim President R. Brad Martin and former University Counsel, to serve as District Court Judge for the Western District of Tennessee. The Congressman recommended Ms. Lipman after convening a diverse, bipartisan screening committee to conduct interviews of nine potential candidates for the position.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today congratulated the City of Memphis on being named one of the world’s top 20 travel destinations by MSN. The top 20 list included Memphis alongside world icons like Paris, Venice, and Istanbul and natural wonders like Jackson Hole. In describing Memphis, the article mentions a greenway that includes the Harahan Bridge Project, which Congressman Cohen spent nearly three years working on in order to secure funding.
Dear Friend,
First of all, many of you know that this week has been difficult and trying for me personally. I wanted to take a moment at the beginning of my newsletter to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you who have stood with me. I am energized by and appreciative of all the words of support and understanding that I have received from you. Thank you.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – After House Republican leadership violated their own policy of publically posting legislation at least 3 days in advance of a vote and jammed through an ultra-conservative Farm Bill with just a few hours’ notice, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) expressed his disappointment with provisions of the legislation that continue billions of dollars in unnecessary subsidies to the largest farms and multimillion-dollar agribusinesses while providing nothing for nutrition, food stamp, and food bank programs that millions of children and families across the nation rely on to survive.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – In an effort to ensure Memphis businesses are well-informed and competitive when trying to win contracts with the federal government, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) hosted a Federal Procurement Fair this morning at the University of Memphis. More than 150 small businesspeople and entrepreneurs attended the fair, where they were given an opportunity to learn about the federal government contracting process. Photos of the event are attached.

Student Loan Debt Briefing
Inviting Airline Expansion in Memphis
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09) and Danny Davis (IL-07) hosted a Congressional briefing in front of a standing-room-only audience on “The Crushing Burden of Private Student Loan Debt.”
“With students relying more and more on student loans to pay for the rising cost of college, Congress should be looking at ways to make it easier for students to attend college,” said Congressman Cohen. “I was pleased that so many young people attended today’s briefing so they can better understand the issues that may face them upon graduation.”
Dear Friend,
This week I authored legislation -- the Preference for Local Veteran Contractors Act -- to give veteran-owned businesses preference for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs projects. I also questioned FBI Director Robert Mueller about the Boston Marathon bombing at a House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing.
