[MEMPHIS, TN] – Continuing his efforts to ensure that Memphis-area small businesses are well-informed and competitive when seeking to win contracts with the federal government, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) this week hosted his 2014 Federal Procurement Fair at the University of Memphis. [MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) was joined by Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management Jan Murphy at a town hall with over 150 Mid-south veterans this morning to discuss ongoing concerns about scheduling and the quality of care at the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Following the town hall, Congressman Cohen and Under Secretary Murphy also toured Memphis VAMC.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today welcomed Southwind High School student Xavier Brito to his Capitol Hill office to congratulate the student on winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition. As the Ninth District’s winner, Mr. Brito’s piece, entitled “Remember the Dream,” will hang in public view on Capitol Hill for the next year. [WASHINGTON, DC] – One year after the Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision that eviscerated voting rights protections, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) went to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and derided House Republicans for failing to support the Voting Rights Amendment Act which would restore the protections enshrined in the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that $1,012,245 in federal funds has been awarded to 4 local non-profit organizations to help end homelessness in the Ninth District. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Continuum of Care program, which is designed to promote communitywide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness.

“This funding will help local communities and organizations work to reduce homelessness in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today commemorated the 149th anniversary of Juneteenth and recognized the 21st Annual Celebration of the Memphis Juneteenth Freedom & Heritage Festival, known this year as the Juneteenth Urban Music Festival. Juneteenth, observed on June 19th each year, is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Congressman Cohen’s statement follows:

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that his efforts to secure a visit to Memphis from senior leadership at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has paid off, with Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management Jan Murphy set to visit the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) next week, tour its medical facilities, and meet with Mid-South veterans.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Clean and Efficient Public Safety Vehicles Act of 2014 to help municipal public safety and law enforcement agencies save money on fuel costs and reduce their negative effects on our environment. Congressman Cohen’s bill will encourage local government agencies like fire and police departments to invest in technology that reduces both fuel consumption and improves environmental impacts by ensuring that a portion of their federal grant funds are used on emissions reduction.
