WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that Shelby County has received an agricultural disaster designation from U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack because of damage and losses due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that began on April 23 and continued on. Many other counties in Tennessee will also receive federal assistance.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today introduced legislation – the Fair Debt Collection Improvement Act -- that would bar debt collectors from bringing legal action on a debt in which the statute of limitations has expired against any consumer.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that Leo Cormier – a senior at Kingsbury High School in Memphis, Tennessee -- was selected as the winner of the 2011 Congressional Art Competition. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today joined with Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA-27) to reintroduce legislation -- the Sportsmanship in Hunting Act -- to halt the practice known as “canned hunting,” the interstate shipment of captive non-indigenous mammals for the sole purpose of being shot in a fenced enclosure for entertainment or for trophy. The bill would also prohibit hunting via the Internet.
“Considering the sacrifice our National Guardsmen and Reservists are making on our country’s behalf overseas, it is only fair and right that we help them during the bankruptcy process,” said Congressman Cohen. “Our measure would extend a bankruptcy provision that is set to expire later this year that enables Guardsmen and Reservists to bypass the ‘means test.’ In these tough economic times, veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan face a risk of financial distress.
The new grant funding will be used to hire and staff three Service Coordinator positions for three years. The coordinators, who will be assigned to help residents at Foote Homes, Montgomery Plaza, and G.E. Patterson Pointe, will coordinate support services and other activities designed to help residents achieve economic independence and housing self-sufficiency.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) is leading a fact-finding mission in Israel, the West Bank and Egypt and meeting with foreign leaders to discuss Mideast peace efforts. The Memphis Congressman, who was recently appointed to the Helsinki Commission (Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe) which includes Egypt and Israel as OSCE Mediterranean Partners for Cooperation, was encouraged to visit the region by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-8), who appointed him to the Commission.
