WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that two Memphis community development financial institutions (CDFIs) will be receiving grants from the U.S. Treasury Department totaling $500,000. Tri-State Bank of Memphis will receive $275,000 and River City Capital Investment Corporation will receive $225,000. The funds are intended to expand economic opportunities in economically distressed area and are provided to CDFIs devoted to offering affordable financial products and services in economically underserved areas.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today applauded the Tennessee Department of Human Services announcement that it would begin distributing some of the $732 million in unspent block grant funding for the Temporary Assistance to Needy Family programs that support Tennessee families. But he expressed disappointment that $342 million will still be retained as a reserve surplus.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced he filed paperwork to reinstate the Congressional Collegiate Sports Caucus to serve as an informal forum for members dedicated to examining issues of student-athlete compensation, the integrity and fairness of college sports and NCAA eligibility decisions that may come before Congress.
Congressman Cohen originally formed the first Congressional Collegiate Sports Caucus with former Texas Congressman Joe Barton in 2011.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today voted to advance a measure that would eliminate the ratification deadline for the Equal Rights Amendment. The Judiciary Committee approved H.J. Res. 79 by a vote of 21 to 11. Earlier this year, Congressman Cohen chaired the first public hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment in 36 years.

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), joined by Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) and Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), today introduced the Fair Debt Collection Improvement Act that would prohibit debt collectors from collecting or attempting to collect debt from consumers after a statute of limitation has expired.
