WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today hosted a telephone Town Hall on Medicare and Social Security for approximately 90 minutes between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. CT with Max Richtman -- President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare. More than 7,250 constituents from the 9th Congressional District participated in the call.

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) a federal grant worth $399,162 for heart and vascular diseases research – specifically, to elucidate basic molecular mechanisms that lead to vascular disease in response to vascular injury and atherosclerosis. The new federal funds will be administered by the National, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate last night approved legislation -- the National Guard and Reservist Debt Relief Extension Act of 2011 -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) authored with Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R-VA-4), Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA-46), Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-9) and Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY-8) to help members of the National Guard and Reserve obtain bankruptcy relief should they need it. The bipartisan measure, which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this week, now heads to President Obama for consideration.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a federal grant worth $262,500 for research to develop treatments for heart and vascular diseases. The new federal funding will be distributed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) recently cosponsored the bipartisan Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act (H.R. 1148), which would prohibit commodities and securities trading based on nonpublic information relating to Congress and require additional reporting by members and employees of Congress of securities transactions. This week, ‘60 Minutes’ aired a report saying some lawmakers – including House Speaker John Boehner -- purchased stock in companies while involved in debates on Capitol Hill about bills that would affect those companies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center a federal grant worth $315,000 to develop a safe and effective vaccine to prevent Group A Streptococcal (GAS) infections and their complications. GAS infections include acute rheumatic fever (ARF), rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and invasive disease. The funds will be administered by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
