WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) recently sent a letter to Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) expressing its support for legislation he authored – the Citizen Participation Act (H.R. 4364). The measure would provide uniform protection against Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, also known as SLAPP suits, which are used to silence and harass critics.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Shelby County today received designation as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). This Federal designation will further the development of joint drug control efforts by federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement officers in the region and allow them to benefit from ongoing HIDTA initiatives. Congressman Steve Cohen issued a letter requesting the designation in April.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was awarded $435,000 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The new federal funding will help finance continued research into the effects of molecular control of TCR signaling and function on the immune system.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives today passed for the second time this Congress legislation Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) authored – the Securing the Protection of our Enduring and Established Constitutional Heritage (SPEECH) Act – that protects American authors, journalists and publishers from foreign defamation judgments that undermine the First Amendment and American due process standards. The measure, which the Senate amended and passed last week, now heads to President Obama to be signed into law.
