The hearing featured two panels of witnesses: the first panel featured Congressman Maurice Hinchey (NY-22), who introduced the legislation under consideration; and the second panel will consisted of Ivette Rodriguez, the brother of the service member after whom H.R. 1478 was named; Eugene R. Fidell, a partner in the Military Practice Group of Feldesman Tucker Leifer & Fidell LLP and the Florence Rogatz Visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School; and Stephen A. Saltzburg, the Wallace and Beverly Woodbury University Professor of Law at George Washington University Law School.
“These monies provide a long overdue investment in the rehabilitation of public housing properties in Memphis and Shelby County,” said Congressman Cohen. “This is another example of the recovery plan working for the people of the 9th District and infusing our community with much-needed capital. I was proud to vote for the ARRA and I am confident that this funding will create jobs and greatly improve the conditions of our public housing.”
“On this anniversary, we need to remember the sacrifices of our fighting men and women and do what we can to honor their memory and their wishes,” said Congressman Cohen. “It is a travesty that our laws do not allow a soldier’s wishes to be honored – especially something as simple, yet meaningful, as overseeing the disposition arrangements.”
“President Obama has picked them to make the Final Four,” said Congressman Cohen. “He was correct. He picked them to lose to Louisville; he was wrong. We will do well. Go Tigers.”

“I am very troubled by the fact that the bonus money was paid out to executives and employees in the very division that caused so many of the problems for AIG,” said Congressman Cohen. “Had corporations such as AIG not received Federal financial assistance, they would have filed for bankruptcy and would not be in the position to pay out extravagant bonuses to undeserving recipients. This bill will rectify this injustice by providing the Attorney General the authority to reclaim this taxpayer money and to prevent the fleecing of American taxpayers in the future.”
Today, I cast my vote in favor of H.R. 1388, a bill that should reinvigorate the spirit of American service and volunteerism in our country. The bill answers President Obama’s call for Americans of all generations to help their country during this current economic crisis by serving and volunteering in their communities. We are at a critical moment in history. It’s time that we come together as a nation and help one another through public service.
