The National Eye Institute, a division of HHS, granted the new award to Dr. Mitchell A. Watsky, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at the UT-HSC College of Medicine. This grant will fund Dr. Watsky’s research into corneal disease.
“I am very pleased that HHS has awarded these monies to Dr. Watsky at the UT Health Science Center,” said Congressman Cohen. “There are more than four million cases of corneal disease reported every year, and I am thankful that HHS and the UT-HSC are devoting their time and resources toward eradicating this problem.”

Congressman Cohen served as a keynote speaker for the Vida Foundation’s international symposium on the abolition of slavery and the slave trade on Friday, December 5. The speech was well-received and the audience included prominent members of the Spanish Government and some of the top attorneys in Madrid.
Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today received the D. Emilio Castelar Work Recognition Award in Madrid, Spain, from the Vida Foundation, a non-governmental organization that promotes environmental protection and human rights. Congressman Cohen was one of only two Americans to receive the award, and he was recognized for his work on passing H. Res 194, a resolution calling upon the House of Representatives to formally apologize for the enslavement and segregation of African-Americans.
“More than one third of our 1.5 million American troops have served at least two tours in the recent war efforts,” said Congressman Cohen. “Sadly, many of them leave behind young children wondering why their parent had to go away. These children face serious challenges and they need the love and support of their neighbors and communities. Thankfully, there are options to help young children cope with the strain of having a parent deployed abroad.”
