Mr. Speaker, on Monday I spoke on this floor about a conflict I had in supporting this measure because I want peace in our world and I want our troops to come home. I asked for my constituents to let me know how they felt.

Madam Speaker, yesterday in Memphis, Tennessee, a giant of a man passed away: G.E. Patterson, the bishop of the Church of God in Christ, a congregation of over 6.5 million people worldwide headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will speak about the passing of Bishop G.E. Patterson this morning on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. The speech will occur during the 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time hour. Bishop Patterson founded Temple Deliverance in Memphis in 1975 and twenty-five years later Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ has more than 13,000 members.

Mr. Speaker, as a Tennessean, I am proud of the success of my three schools that have reached the Sweet Sixteen.

In America, there is nothing going on with greater import on the local scene than March Madness; and there is no place more happy about the madness than the State of Tennessee, the Volunteer State.

Washington, DC -- Today, the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary approved the appointment of Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) to the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, giving the freshman Congressman one of the highest number of committee & subcommittee assignments, with two committee and six subcommittee appointments.

Memphis, TN -- As a part of the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America campaign, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will read to the children at Memphis’ Downtown Elementary School, 10 North Fourth, at 9 a.m. Monday, March 19.

Now in its 10th year, the NEA’s Read Across America calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading during the birthday month of famed children’s author Dr. Seuss. In addition to reading, the awareness program emphasizes the importance of motivating children and helping them master basic skills.

On Thursday, March 8th Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) joined fellow members of Congress in continuing to honor those soldiers who have lost their lives in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. The project, begun in 2006, will continue to honor these men and women until each name is read into the Congressional Record.
