WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) -- a member of the Helsinki Commission -- today issued the following statement upon news of the upcoming release of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held captive since 2006 by Hamas. Egyptian authorities helped broker a deal that will reunite the soldier with his family in the near future. While in the Middle East in June on a fact-finding mission, Congressman Cohen met with Egyptian officials to urge them to help win the release of Corporal Shalit and move the peace process forward.

WASHINGTON – Dozens of House Democrats, led by Reps. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) today challenged the U.S. State Department on whether the national interest is served if the proposed Canada-to-Gulf Coast Keystone XL pipeline results in exported oil and higher gas prices. In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the House Democrats ask that her department ensure that any oil or refined product obtained from the already-risky pipeline remain available for sale within the United States.

The new federal funding will be distributed by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).
