WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today presided at a hearing on "Oversight of the Voting Rights Act: The Evolving Landscape of Voting Discrimination."

In his opening statement, Chairman Cohen said:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a $179,500 grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for a genetic study of families with a high frequency of blood cancer.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased that this critical research is continuing at St. Jude and am always supportive of the great work the National Institutes of Health are doing to underwrite this kind of important research."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) joined a bipartisan, bicameral letter to Administrator Isabella Guzman encouraging the Small Business Administration (SBA) to implement the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) emergency relief program Congress established to keep small businesses such as local music venues, movie theaters, museums and zoos across the country open and operating.

The letter reads in part:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, released this statement after a Minneapolis jury convicted former Officer Derek Chauvin of the murder of George Floyd.

"The jury has spoken and justice has been served."

Congressman Cohen, the Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, was a co-sponsor and voted for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act which includes provisions for police accountability that he authored.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $349,813 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a project entitled "Ending the HIV Stigma Syndemic: Reframing Health Education for Southern Black Churches."

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased that the University of Memphis is taking on the challenge of HIV stigma. This project may help open eyes and lead to better health and social outcomes."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that two Memphis community health centers will together receive $6,288,593 from the Department of Health and Human Services. Memphis Health Center will receive $5,039,393 and Tri-State Community Health Center will receive $1,249,200.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today voted for, and the House passed, the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act with an amendment the Congressman offered extending the bill's protections to employees of Alzheimer's and memory care facilities.

Congressman Cohen spoke from the House floor this morning in favor of his amendment. In those remarks, he said:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today voted for, and the House passed, the Paycheck Fairness Act, which closes loopholes and strengthens the 1963 Equal Pay Act, including providing effective remedies for women who are not receiving equal pay for equal work. The vote was 217 to 210.
