WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a $619,047 grant from the National Cancer Institute for research on lymphoblastic leukemia.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased that St. Jude is receiving this research funding for its ongoing work on childhood cancers. This grant will keep scientists in their labs and will result in breakthroughs that can save lives."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Memphis and Shelby County will receive grants totaling $7,855,982 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health. The City of Memphis will receive $3.9 million for the Memphis Fire Department's healthcare navigator program. Shelby County will receive $3,955,982 to help build public, academic and community partnerships in response to COVID-19.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Sydney Charles, a 10th grader at East T-STEM Academy High School, has won this year's Congressional Art Competition in Tennessee's 9th Congressional District. Her "Ground Control to Major Tom" portrait of a boy in an astronaut suit, will hang in the U.S. Capitol for a year along with winners of the competition representing other congressional districts.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a $763,801 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease for research targeting innate immune pathways and inflammatory cell death in cytokine-mediated diseases.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased to see NIH funding supporting the critical research at St. Jude. This grant will underwrite research that will advance our understanding in immunology and ultimately improve health outcomes and save lives."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. UTHSC will receive $635,969 from the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute for research on endothelial cells and $500,000 for nursing education for sexual assault examiners from the Health Resources and Services Administration. WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09) and Albio Sires (NJ-08) today introduced the School Bus Safety Act, requiring school buses to be equipped with three-point seat belts, emergency braking system and other modern safety equipment. Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois plans to introduce companion legislation in the Senate in the weeks ahead. Congressman Cohen is a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

In addition to $15.1 million in homelessness prevention grants in April

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis Housing Authority will receive 190 housing vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to prevent homelessness. The voucher funding comes from the American Rescue Plan President Biden signed into law in March.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Cohen voted for H.R. 1065, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.  This vital bipartisan legislation expands the rights of working women by establishing the right to reasonable accommodations in the workplace for pregnant workers. It also prohibits employers from discriminating against pregnant applicants in hiring, retaliating against workers for requesting accommodation and forcing workers to take paid or unpaid leave if accommodations can be made instead.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive research grants from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The grant to St. Jude, for $448,750, is for work on interneuron circuits in the spinal motor system. The grant to UTHSC, for $154,000, is for genetic research involving mice.
