[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today attended the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development’s hearing on the Oversight of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Inspection Process. This hearing was inspired by the deplorable living conditions at Global Ministries Foundation properties in Memphis, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Florida, and elsewhere across the country.
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) and Congressman Dennis Ross (R-FL) today introduced the bipartisan Housing Accountability Act of 2016 to hold property owners of low-income housing accountable for poor living conditions. This legislation would require the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to survey tenants living in subsidized housing twice a year about property conditions and management performance and create new penalties for property owners who repeatedly fail the tenant surveys.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Today, Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX), co-founder of the Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus, and Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) introduced H.R. 6036, Extending Justice for Sex Crime Victims Act of 2016. The bi-partisan, bi-cameral bill harmonizes the statute of limitations for sex abuse victims and sex trafficking victim minors to 28, rather than the current age of 21. H.R. 6036 is the House version of a bill introduced by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and John Cornyn (R-TX) in the U.S. Senate.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Girls Inc. of Memphis received a $372,960.00 federal Talent Search grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used to strengthen the organization’s Education Talent Search (ETS) program which helps low-income, first-generation college bound students in grades 9-12 develop an awareness for the importance of postsecondary education.
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis Bioworks Foundation received a $3,984,433 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Strengthening Working Families Initiative to help low- to middle- skilled parents access affordable, quality child care they need to earn an education, participate in training programs and ultimately compete for better-paying jobs in emerging industries.
