[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would help put an end to the for-profit college industry’s predatory marketing campaigns and aggressive recruiting of veterans, servicemembers and their families. The Protecting Our Students and Taxpayers (POST) Act, which U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) have also introduced in the Senate, would eliminate the loophole that allows these proprietary companies to receive more than 90% of their revenue from the federal government.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – On the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today urged his colleagues in Congress support the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act. Along with the Congressman’s NEWBORN Act and President Obama’s landmark Affordable Care Act, the PREEMIE Act would help achieve the goal of improving our nation’s health outlook and reducing infant mortality rates that remain higher than rates in much of industrialized world.

Dear Friend,

Monday, November 11th, is Veterans Day, when we recognize the sacrifices made by our nation’s more than 22 million living Americans who have distinguished themselves through their service in uniform and honor all of the heroes who have served this country throughout the years. The bravery and devotion that they have shown throughout our history have helped build this great country, and each of us owes them—and their families—a debt of gratitude.

Dear Friend,

This afternoon, I joined Mayor A C Wharton in welcoming U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to Memphis. While she was here, we met with local partners, like Seedco Mid-South, who are helping enroll uninsured Memphians in high-quality, affordable coverage and participated in an Affordable Care Act outreach and education session at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library with area residents who are interested in enrolling in the Tennessee Marketplace.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced legislation, the Restorative Justice in Schools Act, to reduce youth incarceration in America by helping train school personnel such as teachers and counselors in innovative conflict resolution methods that are less likely to result in non-violent juveniles entering the penal system. Currently, many school systems involve the police in non-violent incidents on school property, which helps feed the “school-to-prison” pipeline that is both expensive and harmful to America’s youth.

Dear Friend,

In his 1996 State of the Union Address, President Bill Clinton drew the attention of the nation to a man sitting in the House gallery watching that night. Richard Dean was a Vietnam veteran who had worked at the Social Security Administration for more than two decades. Mr. Dean was at work in the Federal Building in Oklahoma City when a car-bomb that ultimately killed 169 people exploded just outside. He ran back into the building not once, not twice, but four times and saved the lives of three women.
