Dear Friend,
This week, I hosted my best-attended annual Veterans Day luncheon for more than 300 Memphis-area veterans, I introduced Ron Walter—who I recommended the President nominate for the TVA Board—at his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, Congress came back into session and the HealthCare.gov health insurance marketplace opens for 2015 plan shopping tomorrow. Keep reading to learn what else I did this week.
[MEMPHIS, TN] Upon learning of President Obama’s nomination of Memphian Ronald Walter to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors, Congressman Cohen said:
“I was pleased to recommend Ron Walter to President Obama, as I have known Ron for nearly 40 years and know of no finer citizen of our community. He is diligent in all things and active and loved in the community for his genuine, caring attitude. I know Ron will do an outstanding job and serve the TVA constituency with good judgment and rectitude.”
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Clean and Efficient Public Safety Vehicles Act of 2014 to help municipal public safety and law enforcement agencies save money on fuel costs and reduce their negative effects on our environment. Congressman Cohen’s bill will encourage local government agencies like fire and police departments to invest in technology that reduces both fuel consumption and improves environmental impacts by ensuring that a portion of their federal grant funds are used on emissions reduction.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) received the highest grade awarded to a member of Tennessee’s Congressional Delegation by the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) in 2013. In the 28 votes that the LCV’s 2013 National Environmental Scorecard graded, Congressman Cohen did not vote against the pro-environment position once, and his grade of 96% far exceeds the 23% average score of the entire Tennessee delegation.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – After the United States House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013 to alleviate some of sequestration’s crippling effects, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) made the following statement:
Dear Friend,
I hope you and your loved ones had a happy Fourth of July weekend. This week, Congress returned to Washington and the House continued debate on the Fiscal Year 2014 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act. Read on to learn what else I’ve been up to this week.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) late yesterday introduced an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2014 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill that would have helped our nation achieve energy independence and bolstered local employers like Sharp Electronics. Though the amendment failed late yesterday evening, the Congressman's legislation aimed to promote homegrown renewable energy, help reduce heating and cooling costs for American families, and create opportunities for renewable energy companies to grow private-sector jobs.
Dear Friend,
This past Monday, I hosted more than 150 Memphis small business owners and entrepreneurs at my third Federal Procurement Fair. Local business owners had a chance to learn about the federal government contracting process directly from representatives from a host of federal agencies, and I was pleased to see such a strong showing from the 9th District.
