WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today reintroduced legislation – the American Coastal Waters and Shorelines Protection Act – to require all vessels conducting offshore drilling in U.S. coastal waters to register as a U.S. vessel and fly the American flag. Doing so would create jobs, strengthen the domestic maritime industry and safeguard American workers and the environment.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressmen Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) and Peter Welch (D-VT) today said the U.S. Department of State’s newly released Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) on the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline fails to suitably note the full impact the controversial project will have on our country’s environment. TransCanada – which supplies some of the biggest oil companies in the world with toxic tar sands oil – is seeking State Department approval to build the Keystone XL Pipeline, a new 2,000 mile pipeline from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast in Texas.

MEMPHIS, TN – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted a waiver until August 31 to allow winter-grade fuel to be sold in Shelby County in the wake of the Valero refinery explosion, which has created a reduced fuel supply throughout the region. Yesterday the Congressman sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson expressing his support for Governor Bill Haslam’s request for a waiver. Attached is the letter EPA sent granting the waiver.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) was recognized by the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) for having a perfect voting record on the group’s Continuing Resolution Special Edition National Environmental Scorecard. Congressman Cohen was the only member of the Tennessee delegation to receive a perfect score.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) joined with Congressman Peter Welch (D-VT) and representatives from the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sierra Club and Corporate Ethics International to urge Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to oppose the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline project proposed by TransCanada. The controversial project would extend 2,000 miles across the United States from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast in Texas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today questioned British Petroleum America Chief Executive Lamar McKay at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing about the Gulf Coast oil spill.

Congressman Cohen focused his questions on how and why British Petroleum did not plan for a worst case scenario when drilling in the Gulf Coast and how it will work to prevent a future disaster like this from ever taking place again.
