The University of Memphis on Thursday vaulted into a class of the nation’s top-tier universities seeking to harness the power of “big data” in biomedical research by landing a $10.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

A computer scientist at the Memphis university, Santosh Kumar, will lead one of a dozen new collaborative “centers of excellence” established by an NIH initiative called Big Data to Knowledge, or BD2K.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Southwest Tennessee Community College has won $4,041,439 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to develop, expand, and enhance innovative career training programs in the healthcare, transportation, and logistics industries. Today’s funding comes through the DOL’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant Program, a 4-year, $2 billion initiative signed into law by President Barack Obama.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center four federal grants totaling $1,806,838 for a variety of programs and research projects.

“This significant investment of federal funds will help the UT Health Science Center stay at the forefront of medical research,” said Congressman Cohen.

Today’s announcement includes funding for the following UT Health Science Center projects:

WMC Action News 5 first introduced you to Chloe in April. She turns 3 years old in just a few weeks, but has spent most of her life on drugs that make her sleep. When she's awake, she has seizures.
