MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, today announced that Memphis and Shelby County will share an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant of $931,746 from the Department of Justice. The grant is intended to prevent or control crime based on a local assessment of needs.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) is closely monitoring developments in the shooting at the at the U.S. Postal Service facility in Orange Mound that has reportedly resulted in the deaths of three postal employees including the shooter.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Representatives Steve Cohen (TN-09), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and Vern Buchanan (FL-16) today introduced the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, to prohibit the intentional injury to the hooves and legs of performance walking horses such as Tennessee's iconic walking horses.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today spoke in favor of and voted to advance to a House floor vote the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural (CROWN) Hair Act, a measure prohibiting discrimination against those displaying a natural hair style. Such discrimination in schools and in employment is often based on racial prejudice.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) is monitoring the situation following the shooting of a child at Cummings Elementary School this morning and made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today spoke in favor of and voted to advance the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act from the Committee to a House floor vote. The measure removes cannabis from the list of federal controlled substances, raises revenue from sales to reinvest in communities disproportionately harmed by the war on drugs and expunges the records of federal criminal marijuana offenses.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) tonight voted for, and the House passed, a suspension of the nation's debt ceiling through December 2022, assuring the full faith and credit of the United States and preventing a Republican-caused economic crisis.
The vote on passage was 219 to 212.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that three community health centers in Memphis will be receiving a total of $2,374,962 in infrastructure support from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Tri-State Community Health Center will receive $528,303, Memphis Health Center will receive $727,843, and Christ Community Health Center will receive $1,118,962.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today voted for, and the House passed, the Eliminating the Quantifiably Unjust Application of the Law (EQUAL) Act, a sentencing reform measure that ends the disparity between crack and powder cocaine offenses.
The vote on passage was 361 to 66.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today applauded a decision by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to change its guidance on the use of monoclonal antibodies to treat COVID-19 patients in line with recommendations he made in a letter to President Biden last week.
