MEMPHIS – During a Committee on Natural Resources mark up of elements of major infrastructure legislation today, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) asked his fellow Committee member, Congressman Paul Gosar (AZ-04), to retract his verbal description of the United States as a "banana republic." Congressman Gosar declined the polite and civil request and insisted "we might be even worse."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive a $705,287 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for research predicting the progression of chronic kidney disease in sickle cell anemia using machine learning models.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today congratulated the Mid-South Minority Business Council Continuum (MMBC Continuum), its President and CEO Jozelle Luster Booker and the entire staff of the Tennessee Minority Business Development Center for securing a five-year, $1,875,000 grant from the Department of Commerce to change its name and expand its footprint statewide. Previously, the Memphis Minority Business Development Center emphasized support for minority businesses in the Memphis area.

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) this morning introduced the Medicare Medically Necessary Dental Care Act, legislation that would give Medicare patients facing certain ailments or preparing for certain surgical procedures the dental coverage they need.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today spoke in support of passage for H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The historic measure, named for the late champion of civil rights, Georgia Congressman John Lewis, will protect voting rights by restoring important provisions of the Civil Rights Act that have been steadily eroded by U.S. Supreme Court rulings and restrictive state voter suppression laws.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, today voted for a rule that advances major elements of the Biden-Harris "Build Back Better" infrastructure plan. The rule also set annual budget targets for 2022 through 2031 and sends the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to the floor for a vote later today.
The vote on the rule was 220 to 212.
