WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) offered an amendment to a House spending bill to prohibit the House of Representatives from purchasing plastic drinking straws for its cafeterias and food service areas. The amendment passed late this evening by a voice vote.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
"Congress should lead the effort to limit the introduction of plastic drinking straws, which not only harm our environment but are particularly dangerous for fish and marine mammals, into the public waste system."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, expressed disappointment at the House Majority's decisions to prevent his amendments that would have prohibited certain federal spending at businesses owned by President Trump from receiving a floor vote. WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis Health Center has been awarded a grant of $4,499,085 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funding comes through the Health Resource and Services Administration's (HRSA) Health Center Cluster grant program.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today applauded the announcement that Memphis has been awarded a $71.2 million U.S. Department of Transportation Infrastructure For Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant for roadway repairs and capacity upgrades to Lamar Avenue, a regionally and nationally important intermodal freight corridor in the Distribution Hub of America, the City of Memphis. He made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), who serves as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, today introduced a series of amendments to a pending spending bill that would prohibit federal spending at Trump-owned businesses, including hotels and resorts. The amendments were offered to an annual appropriations measure that addresses spending on Energy & Water, Legislative Branch and Military Construction and Veterans Affairs that is expected be taken up next week.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) commended St. Jude Children's Research Hospital which today announced a $100 million global initiative to treat childhood cancers around the world. The announcement came just days after the House passed the Childhood Cancer Survivorship, Treatment, Access and Research (STAR) Act. Congressman Cohen has been a long-time supporter of the legislation and is a cosponsor of the House companion measure. The Congressman made the following statement:

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Shelby County has been awarded $3,557,886 in federal funding to help address HIV/AIDS and to provide care for those living with HIV in Shelby County. This funding comes through the United States Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which helps local governments provide HIV-related services to more than half a million people each year who do not have sufficient health care coverage or financial resources for coping with the disease.
