MEMPHIS – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-9) and David Kustoff (TN-8) today announced that the state of Tennessee will receive a grant of $5,896,203 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to expand the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Forest Hill Irene Road. The state will also be reimbursed for the $4,095,510 cost of fabricating and delivering burial receptacles used for the project. The grant will fund 6,470 pre-placed crypts, 880 columbarium niches, landscaping and irrigation.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that Shelby County will receive a $7,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for air quality sensors in low-income and disadvantaged communities. The funding for the grant came from the Inflation Reduction Act that Congressman Cohen voted for.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art will receive a $250,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to accommodate its move to a new facility on the Memphis riverfront. The grant is being matched with $429,469 from other supporters.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that two University of Memphis professors will receive $525,000 in grants from the National Science Foundation. Thomas Goebel, an assistant professor at the University’s Center for Earthquake Research and Information, will receive grants of $425,000 and $50,000 for seismic research projects. Jessica Jennings, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, will receive $50,000 to study improved tissue regeneration.

The measure would require enrollees at law enforcement academies to receive sensitivity training on ethics and racial bias, cultural diversity, and police interaction with the people with disabilities, those in a mental health crisis, and new immigrants.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s 56-nation Parliamentary Assembly’s Special Representative on Political Prisoners, today welcomed news that three journalists and Paul Whelan, wrongly detained and imprisoned by Russian authorities on trumped-up charges, have been released in a prisoner exchange.

The proposal includes an 18-year term limit for members, a binding code of ethics like the one established for all other federal judges, and a reversal of the disastrous presidential immunity doctrine adopted earlier this month by the conservative supermajority.
