WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will receive an $85,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities to support its ongoing Sickle Cell Surveillance Program.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Last night, Congressman Cohen voted for and the House Judiciary Committee passed a series of bills to help respond to gun violence. Those bills included H.R. 1236, the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019, amended to include provisions from H.R. 3076, the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act; H.R. 1186, the Keep Americans Safe Act; and H.R. 2708, the Disarm Hate Act. Congressman Cohen is a cosponsor of all four bills.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today presided at a hearing examining "Evidence of Current and Ongoing Voting Discrimination." This was the fifth hearing this year on the consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court's Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder ruling and state laws weakening voting rights protections.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department will be receiving a grant of $999,724 from the Center for Mental Health Services for its mental health and substance abuse programs.

"I am pleased to see this substantial grant going to the Health Department's mental health and substance abuse programs. Mental health is an essential component of a person's overall health, and this funding will support programs in Memphis that benefit the entire community."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today convened a hearing on "Discriminatory Barriers to Voting" at the Historic Moot Courtroom of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Congressman Cohen was pleased to welcome to Memphis House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas for this important hearing. This was the fourth hearing on voting rights held by the Subcommittee this year.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis will be receiving a National Institutes of Health Director's New Innovator Award grant of $2,692,500 for clinical research related to neurological disorders.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis will receive two grants totaling $765,763 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The first grant, for $410,606, from the Department's National Cancer Institute, would pay for cancer treatment research. The second grant, for $355,157, from the Department's National Institute of General Medical Sciences, would underwrite research in pharmacology, physiology and biological chemistry.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Porter-Leath Early Head Start Programs will be receiving an additional $1,979,643 grant from the Administration for Children and Families-Office of Head Start. On Monday, the Congressman announced Porter-Leath would be receiving $1,207,183 for the same Early Head Start programs.
