WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today questioned British Petroleum America Chief Executive Lamar McKay at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing about the Gulf Coast oil spill.
Congressman Cohen focused his questions on how and why British Petroleum did not plan for a worst case scenario when drilling in the Gulf Coast and how it will work to prevent a future disaster like this from ever taking place again.

“This month we celebrate and pay tribute to the many contributions made by Jewish Americans. Well before our country was first founded in 1776, Jews worked tirelessly to promote the social and cultural values all Americans share through their work in public service, medicine, academia, law, literature, athletics, and many other professions.
“Racial and ethnic disparities have engendered a crisis of public trust in the integrity of the criminal justice system and fueled community perceptions of bias,” said Congressman Cohen. “My bill would be a critical step toward identifying and eliminating these disparities.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) is the new sponsor of Jane’s Law, a measure that was crafted to close a legal loophole that enables people to avoid paying court-ordered property distributions by crossing state lines. The measure was named after Jane Maharam, who has been fighting since 1983 to force her ex-husband to return her assets and obey court orders.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today testified at the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s hearing on the “Restroom Gender Parity in Federal Buildings Act.” The Congressman authored Tennessee’s restroom gender parity laws when he was a member of the Tennessee State Senate.
“According to NOAA and the Corps of Engineers, the flooding in Tennessee was the result of a 1,000-year rainfall event,” the delegation wrote in their May 11th letter to President Obama. “We thank you for already designating 42 of the 52 counties requested by our governor as eligible for disaster relief. We also appreciate the efforts of FEMA Director Fugate and his staff as well as that of Secretaries Napolitano, Locke, and Donovan and Small Business Administrator Mills all of whom have visited Tennessee during the last week.
