“The contributions of African-Americans to our nation’s rich musical heritage are undeniable,” Congressman Cohen said. “The music produced in Memphis alone is some of the most lauded and influential of all American music. From the clubs on Beale Street, the improv sessions on the steps of Stax and Hi Records, the recording booths at Sun Studios, and the rhythm and sounds all up and down the banks of the muddy Mississippi River, Memphis gave birth to the blues and rock and roll – music that is still listened to today, and appreciated all around the world.”
“Far too many Memphians have been caught up in the foreclosure tidal wave,” Congressman Cohen said. “Many of these families are stretching already thin paychecks to the breaking point to pay for everything including their rent and mortgage. This new law offers the kind of fair and practical solutions that will help these homeowners and renters.”
“Families in our communities are drowning under increasing credit card debt. Many of them are doing the best they can to get out from under it – and they need some relief,” Congressman Cohen said. “Credit card companies had their chance to show they cared more about people than profit. They failed and now Congress has acted to bring help to hard-working families in perpetual debt. I was proud to support his bill and urge the President to sign it into law soon.”
“These monies will help to shore up the necessary services we need in Memphis to respond to cases of domestic abuse and violence directed towards women,” said Congressman Cohen. “I proudly supported H.R. 1 because President Obama and the 111th Congress made this funding a priority, and I plan to work with the state to see that these women’s centers in Memphis are able to get the resources they need.”
I was proud to support this important bill because it will improve our public schools, create clean energy jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and lower energy costs for taxpayers.
In 2007, during an extensive real property audit of U.S. Coast Guard property in Memphis, TN, it was discovered from the Shelby County Records Office, that the Auction Street Bridge Boat Ramp and the adjacent property is federally owned and belongs to the U.S. Coast Guard. The boat ramp and adjacent land were previously believed to belong to the City of Memphis. The U.S. Coast Guard informed the City of Memphis of the discovery, cancelled the existing lease agreement with the City of Memphis, and closed the boat ramp due to liability, safety, and base security concerns.
