“I am very grateful to Chairman Obey granting this request for Southwest Tennessee Community College,” said Congressman Cohen. “Southwest’s nursing and biotechnology program is essential for training the next generation of workers in the 9th District’s burgeoning biotechnology sector. Southwest is the largest public community college in the state of Tennessee and this funding will help to improve one of their most important areas of study.”
As an original cosponsor of the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights, I was proud to vote this legislation through the House of Representatives this afternoon with a large, bipartisan majority of my colleagues. This landmark legislation will help protect families in the 9th District who are suffering from unfair lending practices from the credit card industry.
The Task Force will investigate accusations against Judge Porteous that he committed perjury by signing false financial disclosure and bankruptcy forms and violated other laws and judicial ethics by presiding over a trial in which lawyers from both sides gave him money.
“An earthquake on the New Madrid Fault line could prove disastrous for the Shelby County area,” Alexander said. “This funding will help protect nearly one million West Tennesseans on the MLGW grid from power outages should an earthquake hit. I’m glad to see the Department of Homeland Security recognizing the threat of an earthquake in the Greater Memphis Area, and I will continue to work with the rest of the Tennessee delegation to ensure we are prepared.”

“I am very pleased to announce this grant for the Memphis Housing Authority,” said Congressman Cohen. “This award will provide the funds MHA needs to maintain access to new technology for residents of public housing through technology, or ‘Neighborhood Networks’ centers. Neighborhood Networks centers provide access to computers, computer training and the Internet. These centers provide a wide range of services to help residents achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency.”
“I am very pleased to report that MATA has been awarded these monies for updating their advanced public transportation systems,” said Congressman Cohen. “I have made the improvement of our public transportation infrastructure in the 9th District a major priority during my tenure, and I applaud the DOT for awarding MATA the necessary funding to serve our community better.”
Last night, I was proud to vote for a major, comprehensive energy bill that will lower costs to consumers and American taxpayers, invest in renewable energy sources to create American jobs, expand domestic energy supply and create greater energy efficiency and conservation.
This is the home-grown, American-owned energy policy that American consumers and businesses have been waiting for and deserve. This compromise legislation will make our country safer, more secure and less dependent on foreign sources of oil.
