The National Institute of Allergy and Neurological Disorders gave a new award in the amount of $321,563 to Dr. Lawrence Reiter, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy Neurology at UT-HSC. Dr. Reiter’s research focuses mainly on the study of genes related to autism and autism spectrum disorders.
Dr. Taylor’s research aims to understand how the innate immune system recognize and respond to pathogens and how mutations in these sensing systems affect the development of infectious, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases in humans.
“I am very pleased that the City of Memphis has received these monies to ensure that low-income homes are safer and healthier,” said Congressman Cohen. “Now more than ever, we must help communities protect children from health and safety hazards and build on our commitment to ending childhood lead poisoning.”
The legislation authorizes $13.06 billion over five years for passenger rail – more than $2.6 billion annually for Amtrak, intercity passenger rail, and high speed rail programs, which is almost double what the U.S. is currently spending.

That is why we in Congress have made it a top priority to provide families with relief from high energy costs – doubling this critical investment in energy relief to help seniors and working families keep the heat on this winter.
With this funding, the University of Memphis will support the Operation Safe Community project, a crime abatement initiative developed by the top government and law enforcement leaders from across Shelby County in partnership with private sector and community leaders.

“The Memphis Bioworks Foundation has done an excellent job in establishing Memphis as an internationally recognized biomedical center,” said Congressman Cohen. “We have the infrastructure in place with such esteemed research institutions such as St. Jude and the UT Health Science Center, among others, and the Foundation is working to help Memphis capitalize on our assets. These moneys will help fund the new research park with 1.4 million square feet of laboratory space and state-of-the-art technology to bring more research and commercial biomedical investment into our community.”

The Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF), a division of HHS, awarded the new grant as part of the Child Abuse and Neglect Projects funding program. The ACYF develops and implements research, demonstration and evaluation strategies for the discretionary funding of activities designed to improve and enrich the lives of children and youth and to strengthen families.
