“I am very happy to announce that HHS is giving this award to St. Jude,” said Congressman Cohen. “While sickle-cell disease affects a relatively small portion of the population in the United States, it continues to be an international health problem. I am proud that the scientists at St. Jude are tackling global challenges right here in the 9th District. St. Jude has always been a global consortium of scientific and medical knowledge, and I have faith that their research will continue to lead to more breakthroughs for global problems like sickle cell disease.”
Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) voted in favor of Amendment #2, which will address pressing domestic needs such as restoring education benefits to soldiers, extending unemployment benefits for American workers and providing disaster relief in response to the floods and tornadoes in the Midwest. However, he voted against Amendment #1 to continue the war in Iraq through the summer of 2009.
“I am very pleased that the National Cancer Institute has presented this award to St. Jude,” said Congressman Cohen. “St. Jude’s accomplishments in the areas of cancer research are innumerable and its impact can be felt across the globe. Discoveries made at St. Jude have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. I am proud that St. Jude continues to call the 9th District of Tennessee home, and I applaud HHS and the leaders at the National Cancer Institute for recognizing St. Jude with this award.”
Today Congressman Cohen released the following statement in honor of the anniversary of President Kennedy’s signing of the landmark women’s rights legislation:
The wage gap is one of the most pressing issues facing families, the economy and women workers in particular. Unfair pay affects women whether they are business executives or retail salespeople. It’s a virus in the workplace that strikes women regardless of education, occupation, race or age.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a division of HHS, granted the new award to Dr. Shadab A. Siddiqi, an instructor in the Department of Medicine at the UT-HSC College of Medicine. Dr. Siddiqi’s research focuses on the biological approaches to digestion, particularly with regard to the role of the liver.
“I was proud today to vote for the Democratic budget because it meets some of the most important priorities of the people of the 9th District,” said Congressman Cohen. “This budget will restore fiscal responsibility in Washington which has run amok under the current administration. Our budget plan will cut taxes for middle income families, invest in small businesses and create jobs. It also restores our infrastructure and funds educational initiatives that will help our children succeed – all while balancing the budget.”
