“I was very pleased to announce this new grant for the UT Health Science Center,” said Congressman Cohen. “I have been fighting to make education more affordable for the people of the 9th District and this grant will certainly help that cause. These monies will help pay for the education of a new generation of young health care providers who might otherwise have been denied the opportunity to succeed. I applaud UT for giving talented yet disadvantaged students a chance, and the HHS for helping to fund these scholarships.”
“I am very pleased that the Congress today passed a bipartisan farm bill that will ease the strain of rising food prices for millions of families and commits the government to environmental conservation. The Farm Bill passed the House with a veto-proof margin of 318 to 106, and it is a giant first step in reforming America’s farm policies it will help greatly to assist Americans struggling with the high cost of groceries and gasoline.
“Owning a home is the American Dream, but thousands of Tennesseans are on the brink of losing their homes and becoming the next victims of the housing crisis,” said Congressman Cohen. “We had a telephone town hall last night with more than 6,000 people from the 9th District participating, and this issue is definitely weighing heavy on the minds of the people in our community. I am proud that we have backed a plan that will help end this crisis.”
The Monday, May 12 Town Hall Meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Memphis Botanic Garden’s Hardin Hall, 750 Cherry Rd. in the vicinity of Audubon Park. On Saturday, May 17, the Town Hall Meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Orange Mound Community Center, 2590 Park Ave.
“I was very pleased to announce this important award to the City of Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “This grant will help in the redevelopment of underutilized industrial land and facilities in Memphis and assist in greater economic development in the region. Additionally, funds awarded by BEDI are specifically targeted to increase economic opportunities for low income and middle income families as part of the creation and retention of local businesses and jobs.”
“I am very pleased that HHS has awarded these monies to Dr. Vignali at St. Jude,” said Congressman Cohen. “This grant will fund critical diabetes research. St. Jude’s staff of scientists and researchers is the best in the country, and I’m glad that they are dedicating their time and resources to tackle tough problems like the diabetes crisis in this country.”
He added, “I firmly believe we will always reap rewards when we invest in science, and I commend HHS for again recognizing the efforts of our scientists working in the 9th District.”

“This new GI Bill for the 21st century is a key step in honoring the service and sacrifice of our troops – restoring the promise of the GI Bill to pay for a full four-year college education,” declared Congressman Cohen. “Not only will this strengthen our military, it will also make the heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan part of a new American economic recovery – just like after World War II.”
Constituents will receive a phone call with a recorded message from Congressman Cohen which will prompt them to join the Telephone Town Hall. Once they have accepted the invitation, they will have the opportunity to ask questions to Congressman Cohen on any number of issues affecting the 9th District.
