“I was very disappointed that for the first time in 40 years, this body has yet to include language to grant the historic Delta Queen a special exemption from certain Coast Guard fire safety requirements,” explained Congressman Cohen. “Operating under this exemption, which has been renewed on at least six separate occasions, the Delta Queen has compiled an impeccable safety record, without a single incident due to fire. It has installed the latest in fire prevention, detection and suppression technology to ensure the safety of its crew and passengers.”
“I am very pleased that HHS awarded these monies to the MED,” said Congressman Cohen. “The funds from this grant will help The MED provide critical early care services to the citizens in the 9th District who are living with HIV and AIDS,” added Congressman Cohen. “Unfortunately, the HIV epidemic continues to plagues the 9th District, particularly in the African American community. I applaud HHS for recognizing the necessity for increased funding to combat this deadly disease.”
“Today’s vote is a victory for all Tennesseans who rely on TennCare as the safety net of our health care system,” said AARP Tennessee State Director Rebecca Kelly.
AARP thanks Cohen, D-9th District, and Gordon, D-6th District, for sponsoring the bill, and is grateful to Rep. John Tanner, D-8th District, and Rep. Lincoln Davis, D-4th District, for voting for it on Wednesday.
The grant will permit MDI president and lead scientist, Dr. William Purcell, to continue his research on the wound-healing properties of a synthesized chemical compound that he developed called the “9-cis Retinoid Acid Derivative.” The compound has been used effectively to treat common skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis, but has also shown promise in fighting skin cancer.
Americans have already spent $45 billion rebuilding Iraq and the war costs our nation $10.3 billion a month, or about $4,000 a second. The typical American taxpayer’s entire federal tax bill pays for less than one half of one second of the cost of the war in Iraq. Additionally, the Defense Contract Audit Agency believes there have been more than $10 billion in questionable or unsupported costs in Iraq contracts.
“I am very pleased that the Federal Transit Administration has awarded these funds to MATA,” said Congressman Cohen. “I have made the procurement of funds for our transportation infrastructure in the 9th District one of my top priorities in Congress, and I applaud the FTA for its prudent judgment in awarding this grant.”
