“AIDS and HIV continue to plague the citizens of the 9th District, particularly the African American community, and I am thankful that the federal government is taking a more active role in funding prevention programs,” said Congressman Cohen.
The grant will allow Dr. Wei Li, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, to continue to study the efficacy of new cell-killing agents (beyond traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy) in the treatment of advanced cases of melanoma, the cause of the majority of skin cancer related deaths.
“It’s vitally important that children learn to read and that they have access to books and educational materials,” said Congressman Cohen. “Reading is the basic building block of all education, no matter what curriculum a student pursues. In visiting these schools it is my hope to inspire students and to reinforce the message that education is vital to their future success. Whenever I spend time with students, I’m re-energized in my fight to make certain that every child has the educational access needed to learn and succeed.”
“I appreciate this recognition from the Children’s Defense Fund. Since 1973, the CDF has lobbied Congress and the Federal Government exhaustively on behalf of children,” said Congressman Cohen.
“With oil prices reaching another record high of $102 per barrel today and families paying $3.15 a gallon for gasoline, the time for action on renewable energy and American energy independence is now. This bill is good for our environment, good for our economy and good for our national security,” said Congressman Cohen. “Ending our dependence on foreign oil and using renewable energy to help fight global warming will make our nation stronger. And at a time when our economy is struggling, these investments will help create hundreds of thousands of new jobs. ”
The grant will allow Dr. Peter J. McKinnon, an Associate Member of the Department of Genetics/Tumor Cell Biology, to continue his study of ataxia telangiectasia (AT), a lethal genetic disease that attacks children. AT causes progressive loss of motor skills and predisposes children to cancer and immune system problems.
“On February 7, 2008, Congress passed sweeping legislation to boost our sagging economy, including over $100 billion in tax rebate checks for American workers, as well as disabled veterans and their widows, and seniors living on Social Security,” said Congressman Cohen.
“I have gathered new information from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the House Ways and Means Committee into an extensive set of Frequently Asked Questions about the stimulus payments to ensure that everyone in the 9th District knows what to expect and can plan accordingly.”
The purpose of the workshop is to provide homeowners who are concerned with rising mortgage payments or foreclosure with timely, confidential information and objective advice from trained counselors. The workshop will also give homeowners an opportunity to meet with counselors individually to discuss their own circumstances and available options.
Congressman Cohen delivered the following remarks on H.Con.Res. 289:
“Today, I rise and join my colleague, the Honorable Al Green of Texas, in honoring the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on the occasion of its 99th anniversary. As we celebrate Black History Month, it is only appropriate that we do so by recognizing our nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization.
