To say Congressman Steve Cohen is unenthusiastic about the Tennessee Promise is an understatement.

“The people who mostly benefit from (Gov. Bill Haslam’s) plan are people who didn’t make the grades in high school and are higher than the average income,” Cohen says.

“That’s not exactly who you should be looking to benefit in society, the low-achievers and the affluent.

“I think it’s just a total sham.”

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced Ronald Walter, President Obama’s nominee to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors, to a full hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works. If confirmed by the Senate, Walter will fill one of the nine positions on the TVA Board. Video of the Congressman’s remarks is available here (beginning at 38:00).

[WASHINGTON, DC] – As the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case regarding the legality of legislative maps drawn to minimize the political power of African-Americans, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today condemned the increasing use of this racially-biased redistricting practice, known as “packing,” across the Deep South.

Construction began Monday on the more than $17.5 million project to add a bicycle and pedestrian pathway across the Harahan Bridge.

The Harahan Bridge project is part of the $43 million Main Street to Main Street Multi-Modal Connector project. That 10-mile project will link Downtown Memphis with West Memphis, Arkansas with more walkable and bike-able streets, pathways, and trails.
