WASHINGTON – Dozens of House Democrats, led by Reps. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) today challenged the U.S. State Department on whether the national interest is served if the proposed Canada-to-Gulf Coast Keystone XL pipeline results in exported oil and higher gas prices. In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the House Democrats ask that her department ensure that any oil or refined product obtained from the already-risky pipeline remain available for sale within the United States.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded Memphis Bioworks Foundation a federal grant worth $3,743,098 to prepare about 400 long-term unemployed, under-employed, and “discouraged” American workers for specialty occupations for which employers presently use H-1B visas to hire foreign workers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families has awarded a federal grant worth $797,809 to the Shelby County Government for Project Motivating Offenders Succeeding Tomorrow (MOST), an initiative that was established to reduce recidivism through improving inmates’ parenting skills, committed relationships, and job security.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a grant worth $820,577 for research projects to discover incidence and etiology of pneumonia in children. The new federal funding will be distributed by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center $148,000 to study the role of the thalamus in taste processing. The new federal funds will be distributed by the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). NIDCD is mandated to conduct and support biomedical and behavioral research and research training in the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language.
