This past Monday, I hosted more than 150 Memphis small business owners and entrepreneurs at my third Federal Procurement Fair. Local business owners had a chance to learn about the federal government contracting process directly from representatives from a host of federal agencies, and I was pleased to see such a strong showing from the 9th District.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today joined with Congressman Sam Graves (R-MO-6) to introduce legislation to prohibit discriminatory taxes on the rental of motor vehicles.

“During these tough economic times, state and local governments are looking to raise revenue. But there is no place for discriminatory taxes in business,” said Congressman Cohen. “These taxes raise prices for consumers and harm our local employers. This is an unfair practice that must stop.”

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Following the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling that effectively eviscerates civil rights protections afforded to minority populations under the Voting Rights Act, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) joined members of the Congressional Black Caucus to discuss the ruling’s impact. [WASHINGTON, DC] -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today paid tribute to the late blues and R&B icon Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland on the floor of the United States House of Representatives. Bland passed away over the weekend at the age of 83. Video of the tribute is available here.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – In an effort to ensure Memphis businesses are well-informed and competitive when trying to win contracts with the federal government, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) hosted a Federal Procurement Fair this morning at the University of Memphis. More than 150 small businesspeople and entrepreneurs attended the fair, where they were given an opportunity to learn about the federal government contracting process. MEMPHIS, TN -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis has been awarded $225,000 in funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). The funding will be used by the Health Science Center for clinical research related to neurological disorders.

MEMPHIS, TN -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was awarded $371,875 in funding for biological research related to deafness and other communicative disorders. The funding was awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

“This grant will help our doctors and scientists at St. Jude better understand the communicative disorders, including deafness, that affect millions of people around the globe,” said Congressman Cohen.
