Capt. Sullenberger has received international recognition and praise for his deft maneuvering after a flock of geese got sucked into the engines of the Airbus A320 he was piloting and caused a catastrophic engine failure. He is already being hailed as the “Hudson River Hero.”

I am very pleased with my subcommittee appointments on the Transportation Committee. We will play a vital role in shaping the upcoming American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that President-elect Obama is supporting. We will work hard with the new administration to reach the goal of creating and saving between 3 and 4 million jobs in the next two years by, among other things, repairing the country’s crumbling infrastructure.
No child in Memphis or anywhere throughout our nation should ever go without medical care. I was proud to back a plan that will extend health insurance to 11 million children. This legislation was long past due.
By giving more children access to health insurance, this bill will substantially reduce the costly use of emergency rooms for primary care, and move us closer to providing every child in our nation with affordable, high-quality health care.
“CAAP, Inc. has provided excellent behavioral health services in the 9th District for almost 20 years, and I am very grateful that HUD has appropriated this grant to assist them in their mission,” said Congressman Cohen. “Alcohol and drug abuse destroys families and is one of the major health issues of our time, and we need more organizations like CAAP, Inc. that focus on rehabilitating their clients and helping them to turn their lives around – no matter their level of income.”
On April 22nd 2008, we commemorated the 35th anniversary of the signing of the landmark Equal Pay Act by President John F. Kennedy; however, we still have not achieved the goal of women’s equality in the workplace. Since my days in the Tennessee Senate, I have fought passionately to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work. I strongly believe that these two pieces of legislation will help us make significant progress on that front.
