Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) speaks in support of H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Congressman Cohen supports the legislation because not only will it provide a long-term benefit to the health of our nation by investing in schools and infrastructure, but it will stimulate the economy immediately by putting money into the hands of people who need it most: middle and low-income families.

I was proud to cosponsor and speak out in favor of this bill last year when it was approved by the House, although it was defeated by Senate Republicans. And I am pleased that this battle has come to fruition and that the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act will finally become law.

The grant provides funding for phase one reconstruction of Runway 9/27, the oldest runway at Memphis International. The asphalt runway has undergone numerous surface repairs and this project will totally reconstruct the runway with concrete. Additionally, this grant provides for partial reimbursement for costs associated with the construction of Taxiway V.

Today, members of the influential House Committee on the Judiciary voted Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) as the new Chairman of the important Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.

“I am truly honored to serve as a subcommittee chairman in just my second term,” said Congressman Cohen. “And I’m even more proud that it’s the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, which will have jurisdiction over key elements of the economic recovery plan. We have a lot of work to do, and I plan to hit the ground running to ensure mortgage bankruptcy legislation is included in the ‘American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.’”

Tomorrow, on the steps of the Capitol, we will inaugurate the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. From the inaugural platform, President Obama will look across the expanse of the National Mall to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where one of America’s most courageous and compassionate prophets of peace — Reverend Martin Luther King — called upon our nation to fulfill the promise of its founding dream for all of our people.
