“We’ve been hearing for some time that the country is facing the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, and an increasing bankruptcy filing rate in Tennessee is a stark reminder of that assertion,” Chairman Cohen said. “A well-functioning bankruptcy system is absolutely critical to helping individuals and businesses weather this economic storm, and having a sufficient number of bankruptcy judges is key to making that system work.”
“I commend the House for saying in a single, strong voice that libel tourism threatens the principles of free speech because foreign courts often don’t place as difficult a burden on plaintiffs in libel cases,” Congressman Cohen said. “This was a vote to support our cherished First Amendment rights and make sure that they will never be undermined by foreign judgments.”
The City of Memphis will receive $69,272,000 million and Shelby County will receive $29,097,000 million in bonds.
“Each day the Memphis Area Transit Authority transports tens of thousands of people around the city and Shelby County safely and efficiently. These funds will allow the Authority to purchase 35 state-of-the-art busses and technology to improve rider safety and the efficiency of the system,” Congressman Cohen said. “Access to affordable and reliable transportation is crucial to promoting economic development. I was proud to support the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and am grateful that these funds are moving quickly to our district.”
“This event is a terrible reminder of the cruelty and injustice that still exists in the hearts of many. A despicable act of violence has occurred at a place dedicated to peace and remembrance, and in a building that is synonymous with respect. My heart and prayers go out to the family of the brave security guard who was wounded and has put his life on the line to protect all those who were inside the Museum.
