WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) is monitoring talks between House and Senate leaders and the White House aimed at averting a government shutdown at midnight tonight and made the following statement:

MEMPHIS - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) mourned the death of longtime Memphis civic leader Jack Morris, who died Friday at 87. He released the following statement:

"I met Jack Morris during the Stan Snodgrass for governor race in 1970 and learned a lot from him over the years. He always seemed to have an ear and occasionally a bit of advice and encouragement for me.

"I want to thank his family for his service to Memphis and for the friendship he extended to me. His was a life of civic commitment and grace.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) commemorated the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Day Jr. National Holiday Monday with a series of King-inspired events. He also released this statement:

"I always recognize the Martin Luther King national holiday with a combination of admiration and solemnity. King was a giant of the 20^th Century, a great non-violent Civil Rights leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, anti-war strategist and human being.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) issued the following statement on President Trump's reported comments at a meeting on immigration:

"Donald Trump should apologize to the countries he sullied with his disgraceful comments," said Congressman Cohen. "It is the President's job to act on behalf of our nation's best interests, and as President he must apologize.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) on Thursday introduced the Safer Streets Act, which would create a new grant program that focuses on violent crimes in local communities. Afterward, he made the following statement:

"The Safer Streets Act is intended to provide additional funding to address violent crime in places where the rate is significantly above the national average.
