WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Education has awarded $500,000 to LeMoyne-Owen College under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Program.

“LeMoyne-Owen College has a long history of educating Memphis’ best and brightest,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will help the college expand and provide more services to their students so they will be better prepared for their future careers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Education has awarded $289,121 to a program at the University of Memphis that helps children with disabilities.

“The University of Memphis has one of the best programs in the country when it comes to helping children with disabilities,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will give the University the tools it needs to help even more children.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) has awarded Tennessee $67.8 million to help low achieving schools improve. The funds were made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which the Congressman supported.

“Our children deserve the best education possible,” said Congressman Cohen. “We live in a rapidly changing, highly competitive world. These new federal funds will give our schools the tools they need to help our children succeed.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Education has awarded Memphis City Schools $592,056 in new federal funding under the agency’s School Leadership Program to recruit, train and mentor principals and assistant principals.

“The School Leadership Program will provide invaluable resources to principals and school administrators in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “With these new federal funds, Memphis City Schools will be able to educate a new generation of leaders.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) today applauded the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for limiting expansion of March Madness to only three teams. The NCAA originally considered increasing the field of 65 teams to 96 teams. On April 6, Congressman Cohen joined with Congressman Timothy Johnson (D-IL) to issue a letter to the NCAA calling that proposal “shortsighted and unnecessary.”
