This week in Memphis, I met with 10 Memphis-based innovative startups that are helping create jobs and grow our economy, participated in several National Night Out events throughout Shelby County and in a conference aimed at eradicating blight and building sustainable communities, pushed for federal oversight of this week’s elections, and attended the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law’s 2014 Pillars of Excellence Awards. Keep reading to learn more about what happened this week.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) will celebrate the second annual "Start-Up Day Across America" by joining 10 nascent small businesses from the Memphis area at StartCo. As he tours the StartCo facility and meets with representatives from several of the startup businesses that work out of the facility, Congressman Cohen will raise awareness of the significant impact that entrepreneurs can have on both the Memphis and national economies as well as highlight the innovation taking place in the Ninth District.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center nine federal grants totaling $3,133,410 for a variety of programs and research projects.

“This significant investment of federal funds will help the UT Health Science Center stay at the forefront of medical research,” said Congressman Cohen.

This week, the House passed my amendment to help prevent children from going hungry, President Obama moved to help more than 100,000 Tennesseans burdened with student loan debt, and a new report showed that 60,000 Ninth District citizens will receive a raise if Congress increases the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. [MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced 5 federal grants totaling $4,605,108 in funding for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and will be used for a variety of programs and research projects.

“This funding will be used to continue important work at St. Jude, one of the world’s finest health care institutions,” said Congressman Cohen.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced 5 federal grants totaling $1,356,084 in funding for several projects at the University of Memphis. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Park Service (NPS).

“I am pleased that the federal government has made these important investments in the University of Memphis and their talented scholars,” said Congressman Cohen.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that Immuno Technologies, Inc., a medical research and development company headquartered in Memphis, has been awarded $1,000,000 in federal funding to further develop technology that can help doctors rapidly diagnose Lyme disease. This funding comes through the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant program.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis has been awarded a total of $795,651 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for three projects.

“These funds will help continue the important work being done by the skilled researchers at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen.
