This week, I opposed efforts to sue President Obama just for doing his job, Congress passed a bill to help ensure our veterans receive the care they deserve, and I introduced a bill aimed at reducing teacher shortages in Memphis and around the country. [WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Maximizing Opportunity and Retaining Experienced Teachers Act (MORE Teachers Act) to help address teacher shortages and retain qualified, experienced teachers.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the City of Memphis was awarded $998,618 in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding through the FY 2014 Port Security Grant Program. Under this same announcement, the Shelby County Government was awarded $5,000 in funding and Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions, Inc. Memphis was also awarded $24,999.
“This funding will help keep our city safe and grow the Memphis economy,” said Congressman Cohen.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – The U.S. House of Representatives today approved Congressman Cohen’s amendment to H.R. 4984, the Empowering Students Through Enhanced Counseling Act, which would ensure that student loan borrowers are informed of and adequately understand the risks associated with their loans, including those issued by private lenders with excessively high interest rates and fees.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced a new grant worth as much as $150,000 in federal funding to support the planning, design, and public art for the Memphis Heritage Trail. This funding was awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts’ (NEA) Our Town grant program.
“This funding will help our city develop the Memphis Heritage Trail, which is an important American cultural and artistic landmark,” said Congressman Cohen.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Continuing his efforts to bring high-quality health coverage to Tennessee’s most needy, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) joined Congressmen Hank Johnson (GA-04) and G.K. Butterfield (NC-01) and many others this morning to launch the new Congressional State Medicaid Expansion Caucus.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center nine federal grants totaling $3,133,410 for a variety of programs and research projects.
“This significant investment of federal funds will help the UT Health Science Center stay at the forefront of medical research,” said Congressman Cohen.
