A 2002 graduate of Overton High School, Merriweather has family that resides in Whitehaven.
The text of his statement follows:
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to pay tribute to a Memphis/Shelby County citizen who gave his life in service in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Daniel Merriweather is the first soldier to die from Memphis in 2010 and the 12th since 2002. He died when his convoy ran over an improvised explosive device.

Congressman Cohen’s legislation would limit the amount credit card companies could charge for administrative costs associated with processing charitable donation transactions, as opposed to the existing interchange rate which can be as high as five percent per donation. This would ensure that more of the money that Americans donate to charitable organizations reaches the intended organization.

H.R. 4426, the Wall Street Bonus Tax Act, will tax bonuses at firms that have received assistance through the Troubled Asset Relief Program at a rate of 50 percent for all bonus compensation in excess of $50,000, both cash and stock awards. Revenues generated through the tax will fund a new direct lending program administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA).
