“I am very troubled by the fact that the bonus money was paid out to executives and employees in the very division that caused so many of the problems for AIG,” said Congressman Cohen. “Had corporations such as AIG not received Federal financial assistance, they would have filed for bankruptcy and would not be in the position to pay out extravagant bonuses to undeserving recipients. This bill will rectify this injustice by providing the Attorney General the authority to reclaim this taxpayer money and to prevent the fleecing of American taxpayers in the future.”

Today, I cast my vote in favor of H.R. 1388, a bill that should reinvigorate the spirit of American service and volunteerism in our country. The bill answers President Obama’s call for Americans of all generations to help their country during this current economic crisis by serving and volunteering in their communities. We are at a critical moment in history. It’s time that we come together as a nation and help one another through public service.

“This is just a first step,” said Congressman Cohen. “It is my hope that this resolution brings attention to one of our greatest national shames: infant mortality. We live in the wealthiest, most powerful nation in the world and we’ve pioneered countless life-saving medical breakthroughs over the last century, so it’s simply unconscionable that our infant mortality rate could be as high as it is. I’ve contacted First Lady Michelle Obama about this issue and I hope that the new administration makes this devastating problem a major priority in their health care plan.”

“This report should be a very helpful tool for my constituents and reporters, and we will continue to update it as more information comes available,” said Congressman Cohen. “We are one of the only offices that have gone to these lengths to ensure that this information is available to everyone, and I am glad that the people of the 9th District will have access to it via my website. This report may also serve as a clearing house of information on the recovery act and its impact on Memphis, and I hope it is a helpful reference tool for members of the local media.”

“Blood reserves are at perilously low levels right now and a shortage of 2 million units is expected this year,” said Congressman Cohen. “Just one pint of blood can save up to three lives, so I encourage everyone to come and join with our friends at Miracle Temple Ministries this weekend to give the gift of life through a blood donation. “

“I am very pleased that HHS appropriated these funds once again to Dr. Geiger at St. Jude,” said Congressman Cohen. “This grant will fund critical research for treatments to autoimmune diseases. Funding biomedical research is an investment in our country’s future, and I’m glad that scientists and researchers in the 9th District are leading the way in developing new treatments to a wide range of health problems.”

The hearing will examine – in light of the 2005 amendments to Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code and other developments – whether Chapter 11 is working as Congress intended. As part of this examination, the hearing will focus on the recent Chapter 11 filing by Circuit City Stores. In less than four months after filing its chapter 11 case, Circuit City has closed all of its store locations in the United States and terminated approximately 34,000 employees.
