“AIDS continues to be a serious problem in the 9th District, especially within the African-American community,” said Congressman Cohen. “There have been major breakthroughs in treatments for HIV and AIDS in recent years, and the Ryan White Act provides medical and support services to individuals who might otherwise not have access to them. I’m grateful to HHS for providing this funding for my constituents battling this disease.”
Congressman Cohen released the following statement today after the vote:
This legislation is about fairness. It is about giving families who own one home the same rights as investors and speculators who own two or three. Without spending a dime, this legislation could keep hundreds of thousands of families across the country avoid foreclosure.
Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement in honor of Women’s History Month:

"It’s the American dream to own your own home,” said Congressman Cohen. “However, the current economic crisis presents significant challenges for many people here in the 9th District to keep their homes. Homeowners have different options, and that’s why I’ve assembled this group of experts to give free advice to my constituents. If you’re having trouble with your mortgage and you don’t know where to turn, please RSVP for this workshop and we’ll help you in any way that we can.”

“When President Obama’s economic advisor Larry Summers laid out the parameters for the recovery package, he explained that it should be ‘timely, targeted and temporary,’” said Congressman Cohen. “An extension of unemployment benefits manifests these core principals. These federal dollars are put back into the economy immediately, and in states like Tennessee where there is a 9 percent sales tax, they generate revenue for cash-strapped state and local governments. Furthermore, I fail to see the logic in refusing money to assist our most vulnerable citizens: the unemployed.”
Tonight, I had the opportunity to watch President Obama’s first speech to the joint session of Congress, and I continue to be impressed with his eloquence and depth of knowledge on the issues. Our new Commander in Chief has had an eventful first month in office, punctuated by the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
