Today, President Obama signed into law his historic plan to create and save 3.5 million jobs and start to get the American economy back on track. No mission is more critical to the American people, and the President and Congress got this done just three weeks after his inauguration.
Today, I cast my vote in favor of H.R. 1 so as to provide jobs, help fund schools, provide for more cops on the street, green our country and fund health care for individuals and The MED. This was indeed an historic vote of large proportions, but the financial abyss in which our country finds itself necessitates that we try to avoid an economic depression.
The legislation comes in response to constituents who inherited property damaged by the devastating 2008 tornadoes from relatives killed in the very same storm. Under current FEMA statute, heirs are not eligible for FEMA relief as they did not own the property in question at the time of the disaster.
“Libel tourism threatens to undermine the principles of free speech because foreign courts often don’t place as difficult a burden on plaintiffs in libel cases,” said Congressman Cohen. “I called this hearing today because I wanted to make the public more aware of the consequences of this phenomenon and how it erodes our First Amendment rights.”

“I was very pleased to hear that Senator Harkin’s amendment passed,” said Congressman Cohen. “When we invest in the NIH, we’re investing in the long-term health of our nation. The NIH is responsible for more than a quarter of biomedical research in the U.S., and in the current economic crisis, we can not cede ground on innovation. Biomedical research is one of the primary economic engines in the 9th District, and this industry not only adds value to our economy but improves the lives of people around the world.”

“It’s become painfully clear that the federal effort to assist people with the DTV transition has been insufficient,” said Congressman Cohen. “I don’t want anyone in the 9th District to get left in the dark on February 18, and that’s why I was glad that my colleagues and I were able to vote this bill through in time. The DTV transition disproportionately impacts low-income and elderly Americans, and we need to give them enough time to prepare for the changeover.”
