“As Elvis would say, it’s going to be a ‘blue, blue Christmas without you,’” said Congressman Cohen during the taping. “We wish you were home.”
“Our fighting men and women have been serving bravely in Iraq and Afghanistan for far too long, and I know they wish they could be with their families this holiday season,” added Congressman Cohen. “I hope these messages let them know that we’re thinking about them and fighting for them here in Washington. Next year, hopefully I’ll get to wish them Happy Holidays in person.”

“With home values dropping, a mortgage crisis looming, and the costs of health care, home heating oil, and a college education continuing to rise, Americans – especially middle and lower-income families – are beginning to feel the effects of a declining economy,” explained Congressman Cohen.
“Fifty years ago, the Little Rock Nine made history when they boldly took it upon themselves to integrate an all-white southern high school,” said Congressman Cohen. “In tribute to their courage, the Congress passed a law creating a silver dollar honoring them and the fiftieth anniversary of the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School. I’m presenting the Whitehaven Senior Class with this commemorative coin because I never want their legacy to be forgotten in this area.”
“I am very pleased that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis will receive nearly a $200,000 from the Department of Health and Human Services,” said Congressman Cohen. “This is a new award and a testament to the fine research being done in Memphis at the UT Health Science Center. I’m proud that UT continues to make Memphis one of the top metropolitan centers for bioresearch in America.”

“I am very pleased that the Tennessee Department of Transportation will receive nearly a quarter million dollars from the Federal Highway Administration,” said Congressman Cohen. “This grant will assist the development of the Tennessee Byways Program, which will improve our state’s historic scenic roads.”
The grant will fund the creation and execution of a comprehensive Outreach, Education, and Communications Plan to coincide with and complement the state's current project for re-establishing and rejuvenating the Tennessee Byways Program.
“As gas prices continue to soar and the mortgage crisis looming, I wanted to make sure that no one in my district was unfairly getting pinched by the Federal Government and the IRS,” said Congressman Cohen. “As it turns out, there are nearly 500 people in Shelby County who are owed money by the IRS. We could all use some extra money during the holiday shopping season, and so I encourage everyone to check my website and make sure that they’ve collected all the refunds they’re entitled to from the Federal Government.”
Congressman Cohen said, “I am very pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services continues to recognize the invaluable research being conducted at St. Jude Hospital. Since I took office last year, ensuring unabated support for St. Jude has been one of my top priorities in Congress.”
Congressman Cohen stated: “This Thanksgiving as we gather in our homes with our friends and families, let us not forget the hardships that our fellow citizens face with the mortgage crisis. Home ownership is an aspiration for all Americans, and I am dedicated to ensuring that this dream remains achievable and is not derailed by predatory lenders. In the Memphis metro area, 24 percent of all mortgages are subprime. That is the second highest level in the country according First American LoanPerformance, a leading research and data provider to the mortgage industry.
“I’ve known the Congressman for many years, and his actions locally and nationally on domestic issues have affected his constituents very positively,” said CBTU Founder and President William Lucy. Mr. Lucy, a native Memphian and one of the most revered and highest-ranking black labor leaders in the world, attended the presentation ceremony. “He is certainly a worthy recipient,” he continued.
“Congressmen Murtha and Obey stated that the Senate’s refusal to pass a war funding bill with withdrawal language would not compel them to consider legislation that would fund the war without restrictions,” explained Congressman Cohen. “Today, I join with my colleagues to say to the President: ‘Enough is enough.’”
