Stax Records, founded in Memphis 50 years ago, played a crucial role in soul music's rise to prominence. Its iconic status was recognized during the 2007 Grammys, when Stax co-founder Estelle Axton received the Trustee Award and Stax legends Booker T. and the M.G.'s received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Washington, DC -- Israel Hernandez, U.S. Assistant Secretary and Director General of the Trade Promotion and Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, will speak at a small business workshop on Monday, June 4 hosted by the district office of Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) in cooperation with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center and Southwest Tennessee Community College. The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Macon Cove campus, 5983 Macon Cove.
Washington, DC -- Earlier today, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, questioned Monica Goodling about her role in the U.S. Attorney firings and in Justice Department hiring practices. Ms. Goodling, the former Director of Public Affairs for the United States Department of Justice, read prepared remarks and denied any direct involvement in the U.S. Attorney Firings.

Washington, DC -- Earlier this morning, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) joined his fellow freshmen lawmakers in urging Congress to act on its plan for comprehensive ethics reform. Congressman Cohen, a co-sponsor of Rep. Baron Hill's H.R.1754, a bill that would establish an independent ethics commission under the legislative branch, joined twenty of his Democratic colleagues in calling for floor action on ethics reform.
The House Restores the Highly Successful COPS Hiring Program; Tennessee may receive almost 1,000 new Police Officers
Washington, DC -- Congressman Cohen today joined a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 1700, the COPS Reauthorization Act. This measure is designed to help local law enforcement agencies to hire an additional 50,000 police officers on the beat over the next six years.
Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Cohen questioned Attorney General Alberto Gonzales today during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. He asked several tough questions about the extent of the White House’s involvement in the decision to fire several U. S. Attorneys, including Bud Cummins of the Eastern District of Arkansas. Although he was pleased with how the hearing went, Congressman Cohen remains concerned by the lack of clear answers from the Attorney General regarding who was ultimately behind the decisions to fire the U.S. Attorneys.
Cohen Co-sponsors Bill to Promote Carbon Neutrality

The event is the first of its kind in Memphis, emphasizing the Earth Day spirit of environmental stewardship. At 4,500 acres, Shelby Park is the largest urban park in the nation.

The annual Headliner Award honors a local leader for outstanding service to the community. Past award recipients include Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton, University of Memphis President Dr. Shirley C. Raines, Southwest Tennessee Community College athletic director Verties Sails and Church Health Center founder and executive director Dr. G. Scott Morris.
