[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that his legislation to bring transparency and balance to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, or FISA Court, has gained the bipartisan support of eleven Members of Congress. The FISA Court Accountability Act would give the American people, through their elected representatives, a voice in who serves on the court we entrust to balance our nation’s need for national security with every American’s right to personal privacy.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – After calling on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Saturday to fully consider hate crime or civil rights charges against George Zimmerman for his role in the killing of Trayvon Martin, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today praised the DOJ for announcing it will do just that. George Zimmerman was acquitted of state charges of second-degree murder late Saturday evening, despite not disputing that he killed the unarmed teenager.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc., has been awarded $422,000 in funding to help prevent an estimated 100 local veterans and their families from falling homeless and find housing for those that already have. Today’s grant funding is through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program.

[MEMPHIS, TN] - Just hours after George Zimmerman, the undisputed killer of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, was acquitted of state charges of second degree murder, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced his intention to join the Congressional Black Caucus and others in calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to consider federal hate crime or other civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – After House Republican leadership violated their own policy of publically posting legislation at least 3 days in advance of a vote and jammed through an ultra-conservative Farm Bill with just a few hours’ notice, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) expressed his disappointment with provisions of the legislation that continue billions of dollars in unnecessary subsidies to the largest farms and multimillion-dollar agribusinesses while providing nothing for nutrition, food stamp, and food bank programs that millions of children and families across the nation rely on to survive.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that two Memphis community health centers have been awarded a total of $433,073 in grant funding to help enroll uninsured residents in new health coverage options made available through President Obama’s health care reform law. Today’s grants are yet another step taken by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to help make applying for and enrolling in health coverage options as easy as possible.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis was awarded a $22,089 grant for nurse anesthetist traineeships. The funding for this grant was provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“This grant will help to maintain the excellent standard of medical education at the UT Health Science Center.” said Congressman Cohen.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) late yesterday introduced an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2014 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill that would have helped our nation achieve energy independence and bolstered local employers like Sharp Electronics. Though the amendment failed late yesterday evening, the Congressman's legislation aimed to promote homegrown renewable energy, help reduce heating and cooling costs for American families, and create opportunities for renewable energy companies to grow private-sector jobs.
