WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced Independent Bank – a Memphis-based community bank – will receive $34.9 million from the U.S. Department of the Treasury through the Small Business Lending Fund (SBLF) to increase their lending to small businesses, expand their operations and create new jobs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has approved applications for State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) funding for 11 states -- including Tennessee, which will receive $29.7 million. This new federal funding will help create new private sector jobs and spur additional small-business lending.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a grant worth $437,500 for research into diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) will distribute the award.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center two grants worth $523,415 for research. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will distribute $378,258 to fund the Health Science Center’s research on the impact of Medicare payment rule changes on hospital practices.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center a grant worth $333,000 to fund research on arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases. The new federal funding will be distributed by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) recently voted to reduce the federal deficit by more than $66 billion when he voted on nearly a dozen amendments. The Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2012 (H.R. 2219) passed the U.S. House of representatives late last week. The $649 billion defense spending bill increases the Pentagon budget by $17 billion and covers the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Defense Department is the only agency that will see a double-digit increase in its budget.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) announced that on July 1st the interest rate on subsidized student loans will be cut to 3.4% -- the last of four steps to cut this interest rate in half over four years, under the 2007 College Cost Reduction and Access Act enacted by a Democratic-led Congress. Due to these cuts, the typical student borrower who started college in 2008 will have saved $2,570 over the life of their loan. Millions of students take out subsidized student loans each year.
