WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a member of the Committee on Natural Resources and its Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, today urged his colleagues to pass his H.R. 7398, the Prohibit Wildlife Killing Contests Act. The measure would end the practice of rewarding hunters for killing animals on federally owned land in contests that advance no legitimate wildlife-management purposes.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a longtime member of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, today received the Humane Society of the United States "Humane Horseman of the Year" Award for his efforts to end the intentional harm to Tennessee Walking Horses, called soring, used to force horses to perform a pain-based artificially high-stepping gait known as the "Big Lick" that wins prizes at some horse shows, and for his work on improving conditions for wild horses in the Western states.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) will invest $3,731,439 for the construction of the Tailout Trail along the Mississippi River waterfront in Tom Lee Park. The grant will go to the Riverfront Development Corporation and the City of Memphis.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a member of the Natural Resources Committee, today introduced the Benton MacKaye Scenic Trail Act, linking Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina over 287 scenic miles of mountains, valleys, forests and waterfalls. The trail, on federal land for 95 percent of its length, would be administered by the National Forest Service.

The bill includes provisions to deauthorize the Wolf River to create a lake adjacent to the historic downtown Snuff District and to accommodate a floating entertainment dock at Cobblestone Landing.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced that $1.7 billion from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) has been allocated to Tennessee in the six months since President Biden signed it into law. Congressmen Cohen and Jim Cooper (TN-05) were the only members of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation who voted for the measure.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today wrote to Tennessee Valley Authority CEO Jeffrey Lyash about plans to transition away from coal-fired electricity generation by building a new fossil gas plant, which would require the construction of a new gas pipeline. Congressman Cohen urged a re-thinking of the plan and an increased focus on clean, renewable energy.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today questioned an official from the U.S. Geological Survey's Ecosystem program about a mysterious illness that has killed 85 wild horses at a Bureau of Land Management facility in Colorado in less than a week. The questions were raised at a Committee on Natural Resources hearing entitled "Preventing Pandemics through U.S. Wildlife-borne Disease Surveillance."
